The Nunatsiavut Government (NG) receives numerous requests each year from researchers to conduct research in Nunatsiavut. Any research that impacts Nunatsiavut and its people should happen only with the full knowledge and participation of the NG and the Labrador Inuit community.
The Nunatsiavut Government Research Advisory Committee (NGRAC) independently reviews research to ensure that it is appropriate and accountable to Nunatsiavut and its people and takes place with the full knowledge of those impacted by the research.
We ask any researcher who has a request to conduct research in Nunatsiavut to contact Carla Pamak, the Inuit Research Advisor (IRA), before proceeding.
Instructions for Researchers
The Nunatsiavut Government Research Advisory Committee meets once a month, with the exception of August. Please keep these facts in mind when submitting an application.
To assist with a comprehensive and timely review, the research application asks for the following general information:
- A non-technical proposal that outlines the purpose, methods, and timing of the proposed research;
- The project’s value to Nunatsiavut;
- A communication strategy for research results;
- Relevant licenses and permits required for the project.
The Nunatsiavut Government requires any non-beneficiary conducting research on Labrador Inuit Lands to have a Land Use permit from the Lands Division. If the research involves any wildlife sampling activity, a Permit to Access Labrador Inuit Lands for the Purposes of Harvesting is required. Finally, if the research involves an Archeological Investigation, a permit is required from the Archaeology Division.
The research application and associated permits are available for download below.
Communication
To give the research project the consideration it deserves, the NGRAC recommends that you submit your research proposal at least three (3) months before the start date of your project.
If you are requesting a letter of support, please contact the relevant NG Department at least six (6) weeks before the deadline for submission of your proposal.
The NGRAC will contact the researcher with next steps within sixty (60) days of submission of a research proposal.
